The Saturday Reading Group is for anyone who loves to read, socialize in English, and meet new people.

The February read for the group is The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion. An international sensation, this hilarious, feel-good novel is narrated by an oddly charming and socially challenged genetics professor on an unusual quest: to find out if he is capable of true love. Don Tillman has never been on a second date. He is a man who can count all his friends on the fingers of one hand, whose lifelong difficulty with social rituals has convinced him that he is simply not wired for romance. So when an acquaintance informs him that he would make a “wonderful” husband, his first reaction is shock. Yet he must concede to the statistical probability that there is someone for everyone, and he embarks upon The Wife Project. In the orderly, evidence-based manner with which he approaches all things, Don sets out to find the perfect partner. She will be punctual and logical—most definitely not a barmaid, a smoker, a drinker, or a late-arriver. Yet Rosie Jarman is all these things. She is also beguiling, fiery, intelligent—and on a quest of her own. She is looking for her biological father, a search that a certain DNA expert might be able to help her with. Don’s Wife Project takes a back burner to the Father Project and an unlikely relationship blooms, forcing the scientifically minded geneticist to confront the spontaneous whirlwind that is Rosie—and the realization that love is not always what looks good on paper.

After events organised in San Francisco, New York and London, LitCrawl comes to Angers!!!

Put on your walking shoes, dress according to the weather AND IN GREEN IF POSSIBLE and join the LitCrawl: an afternoon of readings by of texts from Irish writers and Irish music…all of this in unusual places. This is a follow-the-leader event, you will be guided through Angers…ending up for a special concert of Irish music and prizes for the winning team for quiz questions. Here’s the deal: first of all, sign up (this is mandatory!) by clicking here, meet at the library on February 6th at 4 sharp. We divide you into 5 groups of 15. Free and open to library members and students!

And, ready for the cherry on the cake? At the end of the LitCrawl the library has organised a mini-concert of Irish music at the James Joyce Pub! All free!

Lit Crawl Angers is a project of the English-language Library in Angers and the Litquake Foundation. The Litquake foundation fosters interest in literature, perpetuates a sense of lierary community and hosts a vibrant forum for writing.

If you love needlecraft, this activity is for you! Each participant will make a textile creation of their choice while exchanging different techniques in English. All styles are welcome: embroidery, patchwork, quilting, weaving, collage, tapestry, etc.

For those who wish, it is possible to work on a group project. Each person will make their own textile artwork inspired by the Neil Gaiman quote, “A book is a dream that you hold in your hand.” The pieces will be shown at the library as an art exhibition in 2020.

Bring your own materials and join us at the library on the following 2020 dates: February 6th, March 12th and April 9th. Open to library members. Please sign up at the front desk, when possible.

Drama club has been cancelled for this date. Next meeting is March 18th.

Treat yourself to an afternoon of a collective reading of one of Shakespeare’s plays. This activity consists of watching a BBC production on DVD and then reading relative scenes. This is a great activity for lovers of language and fans of the great wit. Free and open to all library members, for more information or to sign-up please contact the group coordinator here.

Join us for our ever-popular game night and pizza party! Cost is 7 euros (covers pizza and non-alcoholic drinks, 5 euros for native English speakers and children under 13). Event starts at 6 pm sharp. Last entry at 6:15 pm. Limited seating and reservations recommended. 40 participants max. Children under 13 need to be accompanied by an adult.
