Eco-Friendly Values & Mission

Here at the library, we are dedicated to a sustainable future and to improving the social, economic and environmental well-being of the community. In keeping with these values, we believe in being environmentally responsible and invite you to join us in our efforts.

This includes (but is not limited to):

  • Recycling all paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, and metal
  • Utilizing sustainable methods to recycle old or damaged books
  • Sending emails and electronic paperwork to reduce printing
  • Always turning lights off and using LED lighting
  • Limiting water waste when washing dishes
  • Using reusable cups, glasses and containers
  • Turning off and unplugging appliances when not in use
  • Donating used electronics
  • Purchasing products from local vendors
  • Using sustainable products whenever possible
  • Commuting by public transport or bicycle
  • Welcoming students to do internships at the library
  • Communicating English-language related job offers to members
  • Offering a library scooter to members, available at the front desk
  • Avoiding goods with unnatural materials or excessive packaging
  • Donating books withdrawn from the collection to other nonprofit organizations
  • Recycling plastic bottle caps (there is a collection bin by the front desk, available to the public)
  • Supporting local artists with Art Exhibitions at the library and purchasing art pieces for the library’s art collection
  • Using a programmable thermostat for heating to reduce the amount of energy used during non-business hours

We invite you to share your ideas with us about other ways in which we can decrease our environmental footprint and act as a model for sustainability in the city! Send your ideas to info@ellia.org. Thank you.
