Activities for Adults

BOOK CLUB

The Book Club meets once a month to discuss a book preselected by its members.

When and where: Meetings are held in the library on a Friday afternoon from 2:30 to 4 p.m. from September to June.

Cost: All members of the library can join the Book Club free of charge.

To join: If you are an avid reader in English and you are interested in expressing your views after reading the choice of the month, please contact the President of the Book Club.

Books and Tea

“Books and Tea” is a monthly meeting for bookworms. Bring a book you’ve really enjoyed, talk about it and then pass it on!

When and where: Meetings are once a month on a Thursday afternoon, location to be announced.

Cost: Free of charge.

To join: No need to sign up, just come and enjoy!

COFFEE HOUSE

What better way to get a head start on a relaxing weekend with a Friday morning steaming-hot-cup-of-coffee-and-sit-and-chat-in-the-library?

When and where: Coffee and tea are served every Friday morning in the library between 9 and 11. Members come in to chat informally about different subjects in English. This activity takes place from September to June. Discontinued during school holidays.

Cost: Coffee House is free of charge for our members. Contributions are welcomed!

To join: Just drop in, no need to reserve!

CONVERSATION GROUPS IN ENGLISH

Weekly conversation groups in English to discuss various subjects in the presence of a native English speaker. Groups have a maximum of 12 participants. When and where: Sessions are held at the English-Language Library from September to June. Discontinued during school holidays. Cost: 140€ for the year plus library membership). CONVERSATION GROUP IN FRENCH

For those who have recently arrived in the area and whose French needs a bit of brushing up, the library offers a weekly conversation group in French.

When and where: each Friday from 11-12 a.m. at the library. This activity takes place from October to June of each year, and is discontinued during school holidays.

Cost: 60€ for a year for an individual (90€ for a couple) plus library membership.

ENGLISH IN ACTION

English in Action is a program that matches a non-English-speaker with an English speaker for one-to-one conversational English that lasts 6 hours.

Where and when: The first meeting is at the library to introduce the volunteer to the participant. The following meetings can take place in the library or outside of the library. The 6 hours can be scheduled in agreement between the two partners.

To request an English in Action:  fill the “English in Action” form.

Cost: 90€ for 6 hours plus membership (to be paid at the first meeting).

FILM CLUB

The Film Club offers showings of films in English.

When and where: Meetings are held in the library once a month on a Saturday afternoon.

Cost: Free of charge for all library members.

To join: Please sign up at the front desk when possible.

FRENCH IN ACTION

French in Action is a program that matches a non-French-speaker with a French speaker for one-to-one conversational English that lasts 6 hours.

Where and when: The first meeting is at the library to introduce the volunteer to the participant. The following meetings can take place in the library or outside of the library. The 6 hours can be scheduled in agreement between the two partners.

To request a French in Action: need to be member of the library and fill the French in Action form.

GARDEN CLUB

The Garden Club is made of members interested in gardening who want to visit gardens, both private and public. Members do not have to be active gardeners but should appreciate gardens. Visits can be in French or in English.

When & where: A schedule of visits is devised at the beginning of the year and are usually organized on Thursdays once a month in February, April, May, June, July, September and October. Visits are mostly in Maine-et-Loire but are sometimes outside of the Maine-et-Loire.

Cost: The Garden Club is free of charge for members. Individuals are asked to pay their own admission fee if there is one.

KNIT AND NATTER

Come along and bring your knitting,
Have a natter while you’re sitting,
Or learn to knit with wool provided,
Needles loaned and stitches guided.
Knitted garments are très chic
So be in vogue and start this week.

Knit and natter is a free activity open to library members.

When and where:  this activity takes place in the library on Friday mornings from 10 to 11.

Cost: free of charge for members.

To join: No need to sign up, just come in and start knitting!

LUNCHEON CLUB

When: Love those French restaurants? Feel like you need to speak English more but in a relaxed atmosphere? Join this club which schedules a lunch in a great local restaurant. For more information and the full schedule contact June Duckworth. Open to members.

OUTREACH PROGRAM WITH PARTNER LIBRARIES

The library organizes activities and leaves collections in library inside and outside of the Maine-et-Loire. Please access our Outreach program page to see where this network of libraries is.

PIZZA AND BOARD GAMES

When: The English-language Library organizes an evening of pizza and board games once per month on a Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.

Cost: 7 € (covers pizza and non-alcoholic beverages). 5€ for native-English speakers and for children ages 12 and under accompanied by an adult. Open to members and non-members.

READING SHAKESPEARE

This activity is a COLLECTIVE reading of a Shakespeare play organised by a native English speaker for a maximum of 10 participants.

When and where: This activity takes place on a Friday afternoon from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Please consult dates on the events calendar.

Cost: Reading Shakespeare is free of charge for our members.

To join: please send an email to the group President.

TOEIC

The library is certified as an open center to give the TOEIC Listening and Reading (Test of English for International Communication) test. To learn more about the TOEIC test, please visit the official website.

When and where: TOEIC testing takes place in the library in the evening between 7 and 9:30 p.m. Tests are scheduled approximately once a month. For more information please contact the library.

Cost: at the end of the signing-up process, you will have the price according to your order.

How to sign up for the test: click on this link to register. You do not need to be a member of the library to take this test. An identity card with a photo is mandatory on the day of the test.
