Don't Tell Alfred

The December read for the bookclub is “Don’t Tell Alfred” by Nancy Mitford.  In this delightful comedy, Fanny the quietly observant narrator of Nancy Mitford s two most famous novels, finally takes center stage. Fanny Wincham last seen as a young woman in “The Pursuit of Love “and “Love in a Cold Climate” has lived contentedly for years as housewife to an absent-minded Oxford don, Alfred. But her life changes overnight when her beloved Alfred is appointed English Ambassador to Paris.

There is room in the Bookclub for a few more avid readers of English. The bookclub meets once a month to discuss the club choice which we have all read and enjoy tea and cakes together afterwards. For more information and to join the group, please contact the Book Club President by clicking here. Upcoming dates for 2015-2016 are December 18th, January 22nd, February 19th, March 18th, April 22nd, May 20th & June 17th.

Virgin Suicides

The library is pleased to offer a showing of a great film in English on one Saturday afternoon a month. The December showing will be of “Virgin Suicides”.

The Virgin Suicides is a 1999 American drama written and directed by Sofia Coppola. It is based on the 1993 best selling debut novel of the same name by American author Jeffrey Eugenides. The film tells of the brief lives of five teenage sisters in a middle class suburb near the outskirts of Detroit during the 1970s. After the youngest sister makes an initial attempt at suicide, her sisters are put under close scrutiny by their parents, eventually being put into near-confinement, which leads to increasingly depressive and isolated behaviour.

Screening begins at 15:00 sharp. This activity is free of charge for all library members. Please sign up at the front desk in advance if possible. A discussion in English will follow the film.
