Grissom Gang

“The Grissom Gang”, film by Robert Aldrich.

The Grissom Gang is a 1971 American period gangster film directed and produced by Robert Aldrich from a screenplay by Leon Griffiths. The film is the second adaptation of the 1939 novel “No Orchids for Miss Blandish” by James Hadley Chase, which was first brought to the screen in 1948. Previously filmed in England in 1948 under its original title, the central conceit was that the heiress, who felt stifled by her upper-class life-style, fell in love with the abductor and his comparative freedom to live his life on the edge. In this remake, Aldrich and Griffiths reversed this angle: the heiress merely strings him along in an attempt to escape. This version was also played more for laughs, in particular the outlandishly deranged behavior of the gang. The time period and locale have also been changed from 1948 New York in the first adaptation to 1931 Missouri in the remake.

Screening begins at 15:00 sharp. This activity is free of charge for all library members. Please reserve sign up at the front desk in advance. A discussion in English will follow the film.

Documentary “No Direction Home: Bob Dylan” | 24/05/2016 | 3:00 pm-5:00 pm

No Direction Home

To celebrate Bob Dylan’s 75th birthday the library will be showing the great documentary film in English “No Direction Home: Bob Dylan” followed by a debate with a Dylanologist : Laurette Maillet.

No Direction Home: Bob Dylan; A Martin Scorsese Picture is a documentary film by Martin Scorsese that traces the life of Bob Dylan, and his impact on 20th-century American popular music and culture. The film focuses on the period between Dylan’s arrival in New York in January 1961 and his “retirement” from touring following his motorcycle accident in July 1966. This period encapsulates Dylan’s rise to fame as a folk singer and songwriter, and the controversy surrounding his move to a rock style of music. The title is taken from a lyric of Dylan’s 1965 hit single, “Like a Rolling Stone”.
No need to reserve, just come and enjoy! Limited seating…first come, first served.

Saturday book group

Saturday book group | 21/05/2016 | 3:00 pm-4:30 pm

books
The library’s bookclub has expanded to a new group to meet on Saturdays! For anyone who loves to read, socialize in English, and meet new people come join us on May 21st at 3pm at the library. Here is the line-up of great reading to come!

Saturday May 21st (3-4:30pm): Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn *we will discuss the book AND the 2014 film nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards

Book summary: On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy’s diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media—as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents—the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter—but is he really a killer?
Saturday June 18th (3-4:30pm): The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
Book summary: Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. “Jess and Jason,” she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost. And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and becomes inextricably entwined in what happens next, as well as in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?

When and where: Meetings will be held in the library once a month on Saturday afternoons starting at 3:00 from March through June. Cost: FREE to all members of the library. To join: Please contact Anne Kaar at bookgroup@ellia.org

Burgess Boys

The May read for the bookclub is “The Burgess Boys” by Elizabeth Strout.

Haunted by the freak accident that killed their father when they were children, Jim and Bob Burgess escaped from their Maine hometown of Shirley Falls for New York City as soon as they possibly could. Jim, a sleek, successful corporate lawyer, has belittled his bighearted brother their whole lives, and Bob, a legal aid attorney who idolises Jim, has always taken it in his stride. But their long-standing dynamic is upended when their sister, Susan – the sibling who stayed behind – urgently calls them home. Her lonely teenage son, Zach, has landed himself into a world of trouble, and Susan desperately needs their help. And so the Burgess brothers return to the landscape of their childhood, where the long-buried tensions that have shaped and shadowed their relationship begin to surface in unexpected ways that will change them forever.
