Saturday Reading Group

The Saturday Reading Group is for anyone who loves to read, socialize in English, and meet new people. For this meeting, the group will read Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese.

Indian Horse is in the form of a memoir written by Saul at the New Dawn Centre, as an alternative to him telling his story to the group there. Saul Indian Horse has hit bottom. His last binge almost killed him, and now hes a reluctant resident in a treatment centre for alcoholics, surrounded by people hes sure will never understand him. But Saul wants peace, and he grudgingly comes to see that hell find it only through telling his story. For him, taken forcibly from the land and his family when hes sent to residential school, salvation came for a while through his incredible gifts as a hockey player. But in the harsh realities of 1960s Canada, he battled obdurate racism and the spirit-destroying effects of cultural alienation and displacement. Indian Horse unfolds against the bleak loveliness of northern Ontario, all rock, marsh, bog and cedar.

Meetings are once a month on Saturday afternoons starting at 3 pm. Open to all library members. To sign up please contact the group coordinator at bookgroup@ellia.org.
