Talk by Curtis Robert Young on African-American soldiers in France in WW1

The library is pleased to announce a new Speaker series in English that will take place from September 2017 through June 2018 with a variety of different topics. Click here for a schedule of talks through December.

Curtis Robert Young will be speaking on “When the Blues People Sang America to France – African-American soldiers in France in World War 1”

Curtis Robert Young is a historian, consultant and writer. He is professor of literature at ESSEC Grande Ecole.  His current work celebrates the role played by African-American soldiers in 1917 France.  He lives in Paris.

No reservations necessary. Limited seating so come early! This program has been made possible through a generous grant from the American Embassy.

Walk and Talk

Time to get outside! Get on those hiking boots and take some time to revel in the great outdoors! The idea is to organise an easy walk once a month – approximately 10 km, 2 to 3 hours, in the afternoon – in order to discover or re-discover the beautiful hiking paths of the Maine-et-Loire. Come along with good walking shoes, protection against rain, cold or heat according to the season…. a bottle of water and a little “en-cas” to keep you going ! Maximum group is 20 so make sure to sign up!

The Internet is wonderful and can answer all your questions. For most of us, it is the main source for news. Indeed, we have immediate access to plenty of media from different part of the world. But can they all be trusted? Using different sources and media, the press review helps you to find your way through the news and be well-informed. This is an informal sharing and discussion of the news in English.

Meeting are held on Saturdays from 3-4:30PM.

This new activity for library members is organized by freelance journalist and library volunteer: Isma Hassaine-Poirier

 


Film Club presents “Fargo”

The next film club event will be a showing of “Fargo”.  Fargo is a 1996 American black comedy crime film written, produced, edited, and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. Frances McDormand stars as a pregnant Minnesota police chief investigating roadside homicides that ensue after a desperate car salesman (William H. Macy) hires two criminals (Steve Buscemiand Peter Stormare) to kidnap his wife in order to extort a hefty ransom from his wealthy father-in-law (Harve Presnell).

Screening begins at 15:00 sharp. This activity is free of charge for all library members. Please reserve by signing up at the front desk in advance. A discussion in English will follow the film.
