Annual General Meeting

The library’s Annual General Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 2nd at 6:30pm. 

Agenda:

  • Approval of the Annual General Meeting minutes of April 3rd, 2024
  • Presentation and approval of the Annual Report for 2024 and the Orientation Report for 2025
  • Approval of the 2024 accounts
  • Approval of the 2025 provisional budget
  • Elections : Six seats on the library’s board are up for election this year :
    • Three seats for members representing the general public,
    • one seat to represent university professors,
    • one to represent high school teachers,
    • one seat to represent the students of the Université Catholique de l’Ouest.
  • Questions

We invite members to join us at the end of the meeting for light refreshments.

Saturday Reading Group

The Saturday Reading Group is for anyone who loves to read, socialize in English, and meet new people. For this meeting, the group will read « The Secret Life of Bees » by Sue Monk Kidd.

Meetings are once a month on Saturday afternoons starting at 3 pm. Open to all library members. To sign up please contact the group coordinator at bookgroup@ellia.org.

Spring Fundraiser:  Big, Big Book Sale (BBB)

It’s time for our next BIG, BIG BOOK SALE (BBB)! 

Come to the library and browse through hundreds of second-hand books in English that we’ll have for sale.  Whatever your reading style or level is, we’ll have something for you:  children’s books, young adult fiction, crime thrillers, classic novels, non-fiction (gardening, cooking) biographies, autobiographies and many, many more!

The cost is 2€ per book, or buy 5 books and get the 6th book free!  We will be open from 10:00 to 18:00, but we encourage you to come early before our hottest titles go!

And that’s not all.  We’ll also have an assortment of plants and homemade baked goods for sale.  You don’t want to miss out!

This event is open to the public.

We are a registered nonprofit and the BBB is a bi-annual library fundraiser in which we sell books that have been generously donated to us by our community in order to raise money to fund our operations.  It is an important event that allows us to continue to thrive and offer quality books and services. 

If you are interested in donating your gently used books, you may bring them to the front desk of the library before Saturday, May 22nd.  Thank you for your continued support!

Walk and Talk

Get on those hiking boots and take some time to revel in the great outdoors! The group « Walk and Talk » organises an easy walk once a month – approximately 10 km, 2 to 3 hours in the afternoon – in order to discover or re-discover the beautiful hiking paths of the Maine-et-Loire. Come along with good walking shoes, protection against rain, cold or heat according to the season…. a bottle of water and a little « en-cas » to keep your stamina up !

Maximum group is 20 so make sure to sign up!

The film club presents a film in English once a month on a Saturday afternoon.

This showing will be of Erin Brockovich starring Julia Robers.

Regional Public Speaking Competition in English for High Schoolers

The English-Speaking Union Loire Valley, along with the English-language Library in Angers and the Maison de l’Europe, are pleased to invite the general public to the Regional Public Speaking Competition in English for high school students on Saturday, March 15th starting at 2 pm at the Salons de la Présidence, Hotel du Département, Place Michel Debré in Angers.

High school students from schools in the Pays de la Loire will be competing to represent France in the International Public Speaking Competition, organized by the English Speaking Union to take place in London this May.

This event is free and open to the public.

Please note that the prestigious Hotel du Département is a government building. You will be required to present a valid photo ID to be allowed entry to the event.

Treat yourself to an afternoon of a collective reading of one of Shakespeare’s plays. This activity consists of watching a BBC production on DVD and then reading relative scenes. Author Talk:  Yara El-Ghadban

Join us for this special Author Talk in English by Yara El-Ghadban on her novel “I am Ariel Sharon” as a part of her residence with Lettres sur la Loire et d’Ailleurs. The talk will take place from 10-11 followed by a book signing.
Born in 1976, YARA EL-GHADBAN is a Palestinian-Canadian novelist and anthropologist. Her books explore the lives of men, women and children who dream of a future despite history, colonial violence and exile. She is the author of four novels published by Mémoire d’encrier. Her most recent,  La danse des flamants roses (2024), winner of the Mare Nostrum Prize for best Mediterranean novel, is shortlisted for the Frontières Prize and Prix des lycéens de la region des Pays de la Loire in France. Yara El-Ghadban wrote her first novel L’ombre de l’olivier in 2011. She published Le parfum de Nour in 2015 and Je suis Ariel Sharon in 2018. The latter won the Blue Metropolis Diversity Prize in 2019. Je suis Ariel Sharon has been translated into English, Arabic and German. In 2021, she co-authored with Rodney Saint-Éloi the essay Les racistes n’ont jamais vu la mer, a finalist for the 2022 Prix des libraires in Québec. Yara El-Ghadban was awarded the 2017 Victor-Martyn-Lynch-Staunton Prize by the Canada Council for the Arts for her contribution to Canadian literature. She lives and writes in Montreal.
