Saturday Reading Group
The Saturday Reading Group is for anyone who loves to read, socialize in English, and meet new people. The October read for the group is The Crucible by Arthur Miller. Miller’s drama is a searing portrait of a community engulfed by hysteria during the witch-hunts and trials in seventeenth-century Salem, Massachusetts. Based on historical people and real events, a young girl accuses Elizabeth Proctor of being a witch and the self-righteous church leaders and townspeople insist that Elizabeth be brought to trial. The ruthlessness of the prosecutors and the eagerness of neighbor to testify against neighbor brilliantly illuminates the destructive power of socially sanctioned violence. Meetings are once a month on Saturday afternoons starting at 3 pm. Open to all library members. To sign up please contact the group coordinator at bookgroup@ellia.org.
