Saturday Reading Group
![]() |
The Saturday Reading Group is for anyone who loves to read, socialize in English, and meet new people. The May read for the group is « The Quiet American » by Graham Greene. Pyle is the brash young idealist sent out by Washington on a mysterious mission to Saigon, where the French Army struggles against the Vietminh guerrillas. Young Pyle’s well-intentioned policies blunder into bloodshed. Originally published in 1956 and twice adapted to film, The Quiet American remains a terrifying and prescient portrait of innocence at large. The group will also be discussing the 2002 film based on the same title: Michael Caine gives one of his best performances. Review: « A subtle and penetrating work, made to look effortless; nothing is forced or pushed, so much so that it’s easy to overlook the extraordinary challenges posed by Graham Greene’s novel. « Meetings are held at the library once a month on Saturday afternoons starting at 3 pm. Free to all library members, to join please contact Anne Kaar at bookgroup@ellia.org.
