Saturday Reading Group by ZOOM

The Saturday Reading Group is for anyone who loves to read, socialize in English, and meet new people. Considering the current situation, the discussion will be online using ZOOM. Please click here (Meeting ID: 813 2873 3373).

The December read for the group is Educated by Tara Westover. Tara Westover was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches and sleeping with her “head-for-the-hills bag”. In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged in her father’s junkyard. Her father forbade hospitals, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. Gashes and concussions, even burns from explosions, were all treated at home with herbalism. The family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. Then, lacking any formal education, Tara began to educate herself. She taught herself enough mathematics and grammar to be admitted to Brigham Young University, where she studied history, learning for the first time about important world events like the Holocaust and the civil rights movement. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge. Only then would she wonder if she’d traveled too far, if there was still a way home.

Meetings are once a month on Saturday afternoons starting at 3 pm. Open to all library members. To sign up please contact the group coordinator at bookgroup@ellia.org.

Textile Arts & Crafts: CANCELLED

If you would like to do textile arts while speaking in English, this activity is for you!

Participants will create textile pieces of their choice using any technique that suits them: embroidery, patchwork, quilting, weaving, collages…

We created our first joint project in 2019. The various pieces that were designed, inspired by Neil Gaiman’s quote: ‘A book is a dream that you hold in your hand’, are exhibited at the library.

Our second project is underway. Our goal is to create around 30 squares. It will also be an opportunity for each person to learn new techniques. Join us and contribute to this unique project!

Bring your own materials and meet us at the library on Thursday afternoons from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the following dates: October 1, November 5, December 3, 2020. Open to library members. Please sign up at the front desk, when possible.
