Books at heart live readings online!

In January, we ran an event for the Nuit de la Lecture,  France’s national celebration of reading. Now we are running monthly follow-on events. They will be on-line, using video conferencing.

Your fellow readers will present a favourite book, read a few pages; then we will open the discussion. All the titles come from Project Gutenberg – you can access the e-books for free.

First event : 3 books, 3 readers

Jeff Ball – Tess of the D’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy

John Cassini – The Awakening, and Selected Short Stories by Kate Chopin

John Gallienne – The Final Problem (Sherlock Holmes) by Arthur Conan Doyle

The event is free of charge to library members, but you must register here

Apéro poétique: haiku and origami

Apéro poétique: haiku and origami | 20/03/2020 | 6:30 pm-9:30 pm

Apéro poétique: haiku and origami

Let yourself be carried away during this « Apéro Poétique » that takes place at the “122” at the top of the Rue de la Chalouère (where the CABA used to be). Part of the “Printemps des Poètes” the library and other non-profits are organizing an evening with different activities…

The library (yours truly!) had the bright idea of asking people to write a SHORT poem in Haiku style (we will have some very basic rules printed for people to follow) and then fold the haiku into an origami boat and ‘float” it in a small pool…fun, huh?

No need to sign up. Just come and enjoy!

The HAPPENING: Poetry, Music & Painting

The HAPPENING: Poetry, Music & Painting | 07/03/2020 | 5:00 pm-7:00 pm

The HAPPENING: Poetry, Music & Painting

Take a talented trio: Jacques Josse (a French poet, writer and publisher from Rennes and previously the Director of the Maision de la Poésie de Rennes), a musician and a painter, put them in the same room in front of an audience and see what happens! That’s the idea behind a happening, put the raw ingredients together and let inspiration strike, creating a unique, one-time-only performance that is not to be missed!

This event is part of the Printemps des Poètes (the French national celebration of poetry) which has been organized with the collaboration of the MIEL (Maison internationale des écritures et des littératures) and the support of the Ville d’Angers. There will also be poetry recitals by MIEL members.

This event will be in French and English, it is free and open to the public, no reservations necessary but seating is limited.

The Press Review in English

The Internet is wonderful and can answer all your questions. For most of us, it is the main source for news. Indeed, we have immediate access to plenty of media from different parts of the world. But can they all be trusted? Using different sources and media, the press review helps you to find your way through the news and be well-informed. This is an informal sharing and discussion of the news in English. Please feel free to bring in an article that you would like to share with the other members of the group.

Meetings are held on Saturdays from 2-3pm.

This activity, free for library members, is organized by freelance journalist and library volunteer: Isma Hassaine-Poirier.
