books
The Saturday Reading Group is for anyone who loves to read, socialize in English, and meet new people. Come join us on September 17th at 3pm at the library. There is the line-up of great reading for 2016-2017! Click here for full schedule and line-up of titles 2016-2017.

Saturday September 17th (3-4:30 pm): “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr.
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel. In a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments, a talent that wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a special assignment to track the
resistance. More and more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into Saint-Malo, where his story and Marie-Laure’s converge.

When and where: Meetings will be held in the library once a month on Saturday afternoons starting at 3:00. Cost: FREE to all members of the library. To join: Please contact Anne Kaar at bookgroup@ellia.org

Come and meet Ethan Azarian, musician and artist | 16/09/2016 | 5:00 pm-6:00 pm

ethan

“I was born and raised in Cabot, Vermont where I enjoyed growing up in a creative environment.  Both my parents are artists so growing up I was surrounded by music and art. My parents were part of the back-to-the-land movement that happened back in the 1960’s and 1970’s. In my mid-twenties I moved from Vermont to Austin, Texas where I continue to paint and perform musicI have enjoyed working large scale in recent years and have painted a growing number of murals in Austin, including most recently a mural project titled Migration for the City of Austin’s Art in Public Places TEMPO program.  I have also worked with First Night Austin (and later Austin’s New Year) to create large-scale interactive installations for the New Year’s Celebration.” Ethan will be painting a mural in Angers during the Austin Week festival…and in the library to talk with you!

pen-paper

Come and join us at the library for a writing workshop in English about what it is like to live in Angers.  What do we do with our days? What are the sights, sounds, tastes? How does it FEEL to live in Angers? We will be getting our Austinites to contribute the same and, why not, combine our texts, linking our lives in these two cities.

Bookclub

Bookclub | 16/09/2016 | 2:30 pm-4:00 pm

Agnes Grey

The September read for the bookclub is “Agnes Grey” by Anne Brontë.

” Patience, Firmness, and Perseverance were my only weapons.” “Agnes Grey” (1847) was Anne Bronte s first novel and a poignant account of her own experience as a struggling governess, obliged to earn her living in one of the few ways open to an educated Victorian girl. Agnes is not a romantic heroine such as those we find in the books of Anne’s sisters Charlotte and Emily, but her story paints a more realistic picture of what happens when an intelligent, sensitive young woman has to endure months of isolation and frustration in an unsympathetic household that is not her home.
