2020 will be another spectacular year at the library and will mark a full year of the library’s supporting local artists. Sometimes these artists render the world in a way that is new, and fresh and exciting, sometimes they capture moments both intimate and universal all at once! At the end of the day they all are telling stories which is something familiar, satisfying and meaningful to those of us who love the library.

To schedule 4 art shows in 2020, the exhibitions committee announces an open a call for applications for shows to be held:

• Early (mid January-early March)  6 weeks
• Spring (Mid March-debut of May) 6 weeks
• Summer (Mid May- debut of July) 7 weeks
• Fall (Mid-september – mid-november)

Applications should include a text about your work & 5 images to illustrate your form of art.

Deadline for applications is December 15th, 2019. Please send all applications to jp.molenaar@yahoo.fr

The Internet is wonderful and can answer all your questions. For most of us, it is the main source for news. Indeed, we have immediate access to plenty of media from different parts of the world. But can they all be trusted? Using different sources and media, the press review helps you to find your way through the news and be well-informed. This is an informal sharing and discussion of the news in English. Please feel free to bring in an article that you would like to share with the other members of the group.

Meetings are held on Saturdays from 2-3pm. Dates for the fall 2019 are Sept. 28th, October 19^th and November 23rd.

This activity, free for library members, is organized by freelance journalist and library volunteer: Isma Hassaine-Poirier.

Come to the library on Friday, September 27^th at 6:30 pm for a folk music concert with guitarist/singer Gozu!

A specialist in finger picking, he performs covers of popular British, American and French songs from the 60s, 70s and 80s. For the library, he has prepared a special set of English songs, including music by The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, Bert Jansch, Tom Paxton, James Taylor and more! Free and open to the public. Come enjoy the music, sing-a-long, dance! Drinks and conversation to follow.

Concert de Gozu à la Bibliothèque anglophone, le 27 septembre à 18H30.

Gozu est chanteur et guitariste (guitare folk), spécialiste du « finger picking ». Il interprète ses chansons préférées anglaises, américaines et françaises des années 60, 70, 80. Pour la bibliothèque, il prépare un set spécial « English songs », avec des morceaux de Bert Jansch, Beatles, Tom Paxton, James Taylor, Simon and Garfunkel, et bien d’autres encore. Heather Nathans is the Chair of the Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies, and the Alice and Nathan Gantcher Professor in Judaic Studies at Tufts University.  Her novel Hideous Characters and Beautiful Pagans: Performing Jewish Identity on the Antebellum American Stage explores the ways in which representations of Jewish characters in American theaters mirrored the treatment of Jewish Americans outside the playhouse. She examines stereotypes as well as the characters intended to soften the image of the ‘stage Jew’. These diverse types reflect the struggle of Jewish Americans to establish themselves in the new nation, while still adhering to the cultural traditions and religious doctrines of their ancestors. Delving into a wide array of sources from diaries to tax records to political cartoons, Nathans illuminates the history of revolutionary artists who insisted that they belonged on the stage and who ultimately paved the way for the generations that followed.

Hideous Characters and Beautiful Pagans was the recipient of the Barnard Hewitt Award from the American Society for Theatre Research, as well as the American Theatre and Drama Society’s John W. Frick Book Award.  In 2018, Nathans was given the Betty Jean Jones Award for teaching and mentorship from the American Theatre and Drama Society. She has held numerous fellowships, including ones from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.  She is also the Editor of the Studies in Theatre History and Culture series from the University of Iowa Press.

Knit and Natter is a free activity, open to all library members. No need to reserve, just come and enjoy! If anyone has some extra yarn please bring it in.

Join the library community for a special moment to talk about anything and everything (in English of course!) over a cup of coffee or tea. Coffee House is free and open to all library members. Just drop by, no need to reserve!

Come join the Photography Club, share and exchange with other aspiring photographers and go on photo shoots together. This activity is led by Peter Bolos, professional photographer and member of staff along with Pol Corvez, professional photographer and library volunteer.

This activity is open to library members. It is once a month on Thursday afternoons at the library. If you’d like to join or for more information please contact the group coordinator here.

Come join the Drama Club which is open to adults and university students, with or without acting experience. It consists of miming, improvising, and acting out published works of theater, such as sketches and plays.

Meetings will take place at the library twice a month (except during school holidays) on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 7:30 pm. Please attend regularly on the following dates: September 25th, October 9th, November 6th, November 20th, December 4th, December 18th, January 8th, January 22nd, February 5th, March 4th, March 18th, April 1st, April 29th, May 13th, May 27th, June 3rd and June 17th. 

This activity is open to library members, the cost is 90€ for the 2019-2020 school year. Sign up at the front desk with the registration form. Take the stage and break a leg! 

Time to get outside! Get on those hiking boots and take some time to revel in the great outdoors! The idea is to organize an easy walk once a month – approximately 10 km, 4 hours, in the afternoon – in order to discover or re-discover the beautiful hiking paths of the Maine-et-Loire. Come along with good walking shoes, protection against rain, cold or heat according to the season… a bottle of water and a little “en-cas” to keep you going! Maximum group is 20 so be sure to sign up!
