Earth Day - Great Global (solo) cleanup

Join the library’s community for a litter pick…everyone on their own to keep everyone safe! On Earth Day, starting at 3 pm from wherever you are, take a walk on the wild side (or in town!) and pick up any litter that you see. This is the largest global event in existence, why not be part of it and join the army of well-intended souls cleaning up the planet Earth all at the same time? Remember to wear gloves to protect yourself, sort the trash that you have found according to your local rules and take a picture of yourself with your mountain of trash to send to the library! We will print and post all pictures in the library on our screen so as not to print…after all, this is all about saving the planet.

What is Earth Day?

Earth Day, April 22nd, is celebrated around the world as a moment to stop and think about how to best preserve the planet Earth. A non-profit organisation centralises the events that take place.

EARTHDAY.ORG’s mission is to diversify, educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide. Growing out of the first Earth Day in 1970, EARTHDAY.ORG is the world’s largest recruiter to the environmental movement, working with more than 75,000 partners in over 190 countries to drive positive action for our planet.

EARTHDAY.ORG is honored that the Biden Administration has decided to convene a global climate summit on Earth Day 2021. Many important environmental events have happened on Earth Day since 1970, including the recent signing of the Paris Agreement, as Earth Day continues to be a momentous and unifying day each and every year. We look forward to being a part of this historic climate summit and making active progress to Restore Our Earth.

Saturday Reading Group by Zoom

The Saturday Reading Group is for anyone who loves to read, socialize in English, and meet new people. As a result of the lockdown, the group will meet online by Zoom. Join the meeting by clicking here (Meeting ID: 835 5797 1279).

The April read for the group is H is for Hawk by Helen Macdonald. When Helen Macdonald’s father died suddenly on a London street, she was devastated. An experienced falconer—Helen had been captivated by hawks since childhood—she’d never before been tempted to train one of the most vicious predators, the goshawk. But in her grief, she saw that the goshawk’s fierce and feral temperament mirrored her own. Resolving to purchase and raise the deadly creature as a means to cope with her loss, she adopted Mabel, and turned to the guidance of The Once and Future King author T.H. White’s chronicle The Goshawk to begin her challenging endeavor. Projecting herself “in the hawk’s wild mind to tame her” tested the limits of Macdonald’s humanity and changed her life.

Meetings are once a month on Saturday afternoons starting at 3 pm. Open to all library members. To sign up please contact the group coordinator at bookgroup@ellia.org.
