At work on a novel inspired by the life and times of American modern dance pioneer, Loie Fuller, who performed in Paris at the Folies-Bergère in 1893, causing an overnight sensation, author Vanessa Manko will present a talk focused on her novel-in-progress. The talk will range in subject from Loie Fuller and the many noted artists and writers she befriended in Paris during the Belle Epoque to Manko’s research finds in Paris while she is the American Library in Paris’ Visiting Spring 2018 Fellow. The talk will also touch upon the relationship between dance and writing.

Vanessa Manko is the author of The Invention of Exile. She earned her MFA from Hunter College, where she worked with Salman Rushdie, and her MA from NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study. Her work has appeared in Granta, The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, The Paris Review’s The Daily and on NPR’s Selected Shorts. Highlights of English Musical Heritage

For music lovers who are not necessarily musicians, the library presents a series of sessions aiming at illustrating  the heritage of English Classical Music in its most specific and beautiful forms, mainly vocal music. Each session will focus on a composer, with a short presentation of the work and the composer, followed by the listening of selected pieces through  selected  videos, often with different interpretations. The point is to share comments and criticism with the group members.

This session will focus on Handel’s opera “Ariodante”.

These sessions are free and open to the public. No need to reserve, just come and enjoy!

Critical thinking: the monthly press review

The Internet is wonderful and can answer all your questions. For most of us, it is the main source for news. Indeed, we have immediate access to plenty of media from different parts of the world. But can they all be trusted? Using different sources and media, the press review helps you to find your way through the news and be well-informed. This is an informal sharing and discussion of the news in English. Please feel free to bring in an article that you would like to share with the other members of the group.

Meeting are held on Saturdays from 3-4:30PM.

This new activity for library members is organized by freelance journalist and library volunteer: Isma Hassaine-Poirier

Bookclub reads "Embers"

The April read for the bookclub is “Embers” by Sandor Marai.

A castle at the foot of the Carpathian mountains in the 1930s. Two men, inseparable in their youth, meet for the first time in forty-one years. They have spent their lives waiting for this moment. Four decades earlier a murky, traumatic event – something to do with a betrayal, and a woman – led to their sudden separation. Now, as their lives draw to a close, the devastating truth about that moment will be revealed. EMBERS is a masterpiece – an unforgettable story of passion, fidelity, truth and deception.
