Saturday Reading Group

The Saturday Reading Group is for anyone who loves to read, socialize in English, and meet new people. This Saturday, the group will read The Home Place by Drew Lanham.

From the fertile soils of love, land, identity, family, and race emerges The Home Place, a big-hearted, unforgettable memoir by ornithologist J. Drew Lanham. Dating back to slavery, Edgefield County, South Carolina-a place “easy to pass by on the way somewhere else”-has been home to generations of Lanhams. In The Home Place, listeners meet these extraordinary people, including Drew himself, who over the course of the 1970s falls in love with the natural world around him. As his passion takes flight, however, he begins to ask what it means to be “the rare bird, the oddity.” By turns angry, funny, elegiac, and heartbreaking, The Home Place is a remarkable meditation on nature and belonging, at once a deeply moving memoir and riveting exploration of the contradictions of black identity in the rural South-and in America today.

Meetings are once a month on Saturday afternoons starting at 3 pm. Open to all library members. To sign up please contact the group coordinator at bookgroup@ellia.org.

Write Here, Write Now!

Welcome to “Write Here, Write Now!”!

Writing and sharing: join this series of workshops for people who love to write in English and don’t mind sharing what they’ve written (although this sharing is not mandatory). Springboard exercises by themes, genres, characters, time, space, imagination, real facts, even extending to other art forms will help you get your creative juices flowing…all in the company of lovers of literature. Mathieu Huvelin, a library volunteer, will delicately guide you through different ways to stimulate your writing, keep you inspired and help you get to know the writer within yourself.

“You can make anything by writing” (C.S. Lewis). Following Lewis’s invitation, let’s explore boundlessness: the world at large as well as your own secret gardens through words…while discovering the unknown realms of the writing of others.

Workshops will be run Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8 pm at the library from mid-September to mid-June on a bi-monthly basis, except during school holidays. They are free for library members (maximum of 10 participants). For more information and/or to sign up, please contact the group leader.

Garden Club visit

The garden club invites you to discover the beautiful gardens in the area!

This will be a visit to a private garden. The garden is a mix of a vegetable plot, with raised beds and 2 greenhouses and flower borders. There is a wisteria covered area, patio and chalet all with tables and chairs and benches around the garden, some in sun, some in shade. There are mature oaks and a lime and catalpa, walnuts, weeping birch, apples, peaches, nectarine and plum. There are 2 fish ponds and a wild life pond and plenty of benches around the garden. Sue Goodchild is an artist and has published The artist and the gardener. We will have a chance to see her art too.

This activity is open to library members and offers visits once a month to a garden between April and October. For more information and/or to sign up for this visit, please send an email to Sylvie Leys  at elliagardenclub@gmail.com.
