Come and play (simple) Bridge (cardgame) at the library! Engage in a brain-stimulating sport: the Mini Bridge Exclusive Society. Discover, learn and play Mini Bridge in a relaxed, casual and informal ambiance. Mini Bridge, as developed by MBES allows and encourages

  • conversations while playing the game,
  • comments and remarks before, during and after the game,
  • second thoughts,
  • not taking oneself too seriously,

…in a nutshell, MBES (Mini Bridge Exclusive Society) proposes a different concept from the competing conventional Bridge Clubs.

Annual General Meeting

Our Annual General Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 3rd at 6:30pm.

This year is pivotal for the future of our library. We are in the midst of searching for a new building to relocate in 2025 and facing particular financial hardships. We invite all stakeholders in the organisation to join us for the Annual Meeting to discuss our plans to move forward. 

Agenda:

  • Approval of the Annual General Meeting minutes of April 12th, 2023
  • Presentation and approval of the Annual Report for 2023 and the Orientation Report for 2024
  • Approval of the 2023 accounts
  • Approval of the 2024 provisional budget
  • Elections : Three seats on the library’s board are up for election this year – Two seats for members representing the general public and one seat to represent the students of the University of Angers.
  • Plans for 2025 and beyond
  • Questions

The film club presents "Mr. Turner" (2014)

The film club presents a film in English once a month on a Saturday afternoon.

This showing will be of Mr. Turner, a 2014 biographical drama film based on the last 25 years of the life of artist J. M. W. Turner (1775–1851). Written and directed by Mike Leigh, the film stars Timothy Spall in the title role, with Dorothy Atkinson, Paul Jesson, Marion Bailey, Lesley Manville, and Martin Savage. It premiered in competition for the Palme d’Or at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, where Spall won the award for Best Actor and Dick Pope received a special jury prize for the film’s cinematography.

The film was critically acclaimed and received four nominations each at the 87th Academy Awards and 68th British Academy Film Awards.

Due to the length of this film, screening this month will begin at 2:30pm and will be followed by a discussion in English. This activity is free and open to all library members.

Public Speaking Competition for high school students

The library, the English Speaking Union and the Maison de l’Europe are pleased to invite the general public to the French National Public Speaking Competition in English for high school students on Saturday, March 23rd starting at 2 pm.

High school students from schools in the Pays de la Loire will be competing to represent France in the International Public Speaking Competition, organized by the English Speaking Union to take place in London this May.

The library is proud to help empower these young students! Please contact the library for more information and to sign up as a spectator at info@ellia.org or 02.41.24.97.07. This event is free and open to the public.

“Books and Tea” is a monthly meeting, on a Thursday, for bookworms and tea drinkers. Bring a book you’ve really enjoyed, talk about it and pass it on! The group meets from 2:15 to 3:45. Note that the group will be meeting at La P’tite Cigogne, 23 rue du Musée in Angers. No need to sign up, just come and enjoy!

The "Happening" is happening again!!!

Take two published poets, Valentin Deudon and Milène Tournier and put them in the same room with jazz trio Tony Baker, Denis Tarsiquel and Jean-Baptiste Dima, and professional dancer Clara Tarsiquel and see what happens! That is the whole idea behind a happening…a unique performance not to be missed!

This program falls within the context of the Printemps des Poètes 2024 (the French national celebration of poetry) and has been organised with the collaboration of the MIEL (Maison internationale des écritures et des littératures) with the support of the Ville d’Angers.

Free and open to the public. No need to reserve, just come and enjoy!

Atelier d’anglais pour collégiens:  “Ski, Snow and Surf”

27, 28, 29 février, 14h à 17h

Parler, jouer, chanter en anglais… des activités ludiques pour amener les adolescents à s’imprégner de la culture anglophone. Durant trois après-midis pendant les vacances scolaires les collégiens peuvent pratiquer l’anglais dans une ambiance conviviale et découvrir qu’il est amusant de parler cette langue !
Cet atelier, encadré par des anglophones, s’adresse aux adolescents qui souhaitent améliorer leur communication orale en anglais.

Merci de contacter l’accueil de la bibliothèque pour s’incrire. Le tarif est de 75 € pour les 3 après-midis et comprend le goûter, le matériel pédagogique et l’abonnement d’un an à la bibliothèque.
