Bookclub
"Deaf Sentence " by David Lodge and "The Whereabouts of Eanas McNully" by Sebastian Barry will be discussed on
Friday, September 24th by the bookclub members in the library.
"Deaf Sentence":
Retired Professor of Linguistics Desmond Bates is going deaf. It's a bother for his wife who has an enviably successful new career and is
too busy to be endlessly repeating herself. Roles are reversed with his aging father, who resents his son's attempts to
help him. And then there's Alex, a student whom Desmond has agreed to help after a
typical misunderstanding at a party. But her increasingly bizarre requests cannot all be blamed on his defective
hearing. So much for growing old gracefully. "The Whereabouts of Eneas McNulty":
When Eneas McNulty joined the British-led Royal Irish Constabulary, it
proved to be the defining decision of his life. Having witnessed the murder of a fellow RIC policeman, he is wrongly
accused of identifying the executioners. He is forced to flee, and what follows is the story of this flight and his
subsequent wanderings.
