Talk in English about American artist Georgia O'Keeffe

May 24th
10 a.m.

Georgia O’Keeffe, perhaps the best known American woman artist of the 20th century, is often associated with the southwestern United States. But many of the paintings that made her famous date from her time at Lake George, New York. Gwendolyn Owens, one of the authors of Modern Nature: Georgia O’Keeffe at Lake George, will talk about these iconic pictures. She will also argue that O’Keeffe, came to prominence, not only because she was a talented artist, but also because she had the best agent: her art dealer husband, Alfred Stieglitz. Talk will be in English. Free and open to the public.

Book Club

May 17th

2:30 p.m.

This month the Book Club will be reading "The Cat's Table" by Michael Ondaatje. In the early 1950s, an eleven-year-old boy boards a huge liner bound for England. At mealtimes, he is placed at the lowly 'Cat's Table' with an eccentric group of grown-ups and two other boys, Cassius and Ramadhin. As the ship makes its way across the Indian Ocean, the boys become involved in the worlds and stories of the adults around them.

There is room in the Book Club for a few more avid readers of English. We meet once a month to discuss the club choice, which we have all read, and to enjoy tea and cakes together afterwards. For more information, contact the Book Club President. Next bookclub date is June 21st.
