The June read for the bookclub is “The Ballroom” by Anna Hope.

1911: Inside an asylum at the edge of the Yorkshire moors where men and women are kept apart by high walls and barred window there is a ballroom vast and beautiful. For one bright evening every week they come together and dance. When John and Ella meet, It is a dance that will change two lives forever. Set over the heatwave summer of 1911, the end of the Edwardian era, The Ballroom is a historical love story. It tells a page-turning tale of dangerous obsession, of madness and sanity, and of who gets to decide which is which.

Bookclub reads “Women in Love” | 20/09/2019 | 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm

Bookclub reads "Women in Love"

The September read for the bookclub is “Women in Love” by D. H. Lawrence.

Lawrence’s finest, most mature novel initially met with disgust and incomprehension. In the love affairs of two sisters, Ursula with Rupert and Gudrun with Gerald, critics could only see a sorry tale of sexual depravity and philosophical obscurity. Women in Love is, however, a profound response to a whole cultural crisis. The ‘progress’ of the modern industrialised world had led to the carnage of the First World War.
