Bookclub reads “A Month in the Country” | 17/05/2019 | 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm

Bookclub reads "A Month in the Country"

The May read for the bookclub is “A Month in the Country” by J. L. Carr.

A damaged survivor of the First World War, Tom Birkin finds refuge in the quiet village church of Oxgodby where he is to spend the summer uncovering a huge medieval wall-painting. Immersed in the peace and beauty of the countryside and the unchanging rhythms of village life he experiences a sense of renewal and belief in the future. Now an old man, Birkin looks back on the idyllic summer of 1920, remembering a vanished place of blissful calm, untouched by change, a precious moment he has carried with him through the disappointments of the year.

Saturday Reading Group

The Saturday Reading Group is for anyone who loves to read, socialize in English, and meet new people.

The May read for the group is “The Quiet American” by Graham Greene. Pyle is the brash young idealist sent out by Washington on a mysterious mission to Saigon, where the French Army struggles against the Vietminh guerrillas. Young Pyle’s well-intentioned policies blunder into bloodshed. Originally published in 1956 and twice adapted to film, The Quiet American remains a terrifying and prescient portrait of innocence at large.

The group will also be discussing the 2002 film based on the same title: Michael Caine gives one of his best performances. Review: “A subtle and penetrating work, made to look effortless; nothing is forced or pushed, so much so that it’s easy to overlook the extraordinary challenges posed by Graham Greene’s novel. “

When and where: Meetings will be held in the library once a month on Saturday afternoons starting at 3:00. Cost: FREE to all members of the library. To join: Please contact Anne Kaar at bookgroup@ellia.org

Saturday Reading Group

The Saturday Reading Group is for anyone who loves to read, socialize in English, and meet new people.

The June read for the group is The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook, a Tale of Sex, Money, Genius, and Betrayal by Ben Mezrich. The high-energy tale of how two socially awkward students, trying to increase their chances with the opposite sex, ended up creating Facebook.

The group will also be discussing the 2010 film “The Social Network”. The Social Network is director David Fincher’s equivalent of Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane: the story of a capitalist who is awe-inspiring in some ways, but tragic in others; enviably clever and driven, but also repellently ruthless and treacherous. Screenplay by Aaron Sorkin (author of The West Wing).
