Austin, Texas has been twinned with the city of Angers since 2010 and the two cities have been strengthening links through cultural projects.
For the 2017 edition of the Premiers Plans, the library is honored to work with the team to welcome two special guests,
Paul J. Stekler
and David Wingo,
for an informal talk in English on Friday, January 27th from 10 to 11 am. This activity is free and open to the public.

Paul J. Stekler is a political documentary filmmaker, a professor, and currently the Department Chair, Wofford Denius Chair in Entertainment Studies, at the University Of Texas at Austin. He is a well known documentary filmmaker whose critically praised and award-winning work includes George Wallace: Settin’ the Woods on Fire; Last Man Standing: Politics, Texas Style; Vote for Me: Politics in America, a four-hour PBS special about grassroots electoral politics; two segments of the Eyes on the Prize II series on the history of civil rights; Last Stand at Little Big Horn (broadcast as part of PBS’s series The American Experience); Louisiana Boys: Raised on Politics (broadcast on PBS’s P.O.V. series); and Getting Back to Abnormal.
A thoroughly modern artist whose music is steeped as much in classic pop and American folk music as shoegaze rock, David Wingo’s stunning and unusual film scores belong to some of the most memorable independent American movies of the last two decades, including Jeff Nichols’ Mud, Midnight Special, Take Shelter and Loving. Described by GQ magazine as the “guy who creates today’s most haunting movie soundtracks”, Wingo’s career began when he developed music for David Gordon Green’s student films, and then on Green’s first feature, the indie break out George Washington. Wingo’s career had led him to collaborations with other celebrated musicians, including bands Explosions In The Sky on the Manglehorn soundtrack, and Lusine (Jeff McIlwaine) on Snow Angels. His award-winning film compositions have been called “imaginative and immersive” by Rolling Stone Magazine, his music described as “lustrous Pop Americana” by Pitchfork. In 2012, Wingo was nominated for the World Soundtrack Academy’s Discovery of the Year Award for his Take Shelter score.
