Bookclub reads “God on the Rocks” | 22/06/2018 | 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm

Bookclub reads "God on the Rocks"

The June read for the bookclub is “God on the Rocks” by Jane Gardam.

During one glorious summer between the wars, the realities of life and the sexual ritual dance of the adult world creep into the life of young Margaret Marsh. Her father, preaching the doctrine of the unsavoury Primal Saints; her mother, bitterly nostalgic for what might have been; Charles and Binkie, anchored in the past and a game of words; dying Mrs Frayling and Lydia the maid, given to the vulgar enjoyment of life; all contribute to Margaret’s shattering moment of truth. And when the storm breaks, it is not only God who is on the rocks as the summer hurtles towards drama, tragedy, and a touch of farce.

Saturday Reading Group | 23/06/2018 | 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Saturday Reading Group

The Saturday Reading Group is for anyone who loves to read, socialize in English, and meet new people. This is a partner event with the Film Club.

The June read for the group is “Night Bus” a short story by Samuel Hpkins Adams. This short story was originally published in Cosmopolitan magazine in August 1933 and then reprinted in 1951 as the third in a Dell Books series called “Dell Dimers” as each novelette was sold at 10 cents (known as “dime novels” in the 19th century). The story is about Ellie Andrews who has just tied the knot with society aviator King Westley when she is whisked away to her father’s yacht and out of King’s clutches. Ellie jumps ship and eventually winds up on a bus headed back to her husband. Reluctantly she must accept the help of out-of- work reporter Peter Warne. Actually, Warne doesn’t give her any choice: either she sticks with him until he gets her back to her husband, or he’ll blow the whistle on Ellie to her father. Either way, Peter gets what (he thinks!) he wants …. a really juicy newspaper story.

When and where: Meetings will be held in the library once a month on Saturday afternoons starting at 3:00. Cost: FREE to all members of the library. To join: Please contact Anne Kaar at bookgroup@ellia.org
